The guy went ballistic on the pap as Mayer made a mellow exit. The photog says the incident was unprovoked.

John and Jen met up for a not-so-secret rendezvous in NYC last night -- and the Brit hit the fan when one of her bodyguards started smacking paps with an umbrella outside La Esquina.
Police were called to the scene to help regulate Jen's exit, where she actually spoke to TMZ -- saying she doesn't agree with 66% of our voters who won't watch Mayer's new CBS variety show.

OK, it's true he had a big career before "hosting" TMZ, but it's no coincidence that months after John Mayer hijacked TMZ TV, he landed a network TV series.
We've learned Mayer will host a weekly variety show for CBS. And here's the deal. We know CBS would like to run the show as soon as possible -- the goal is the first quarter of 2009.
It will be a music, variety and sketch show in the '60s mold. Ken Ehrlich (who produces the Emmys and Grammys) will produce the show with Mayer.
But here's the best part. CBS execs saw Mayer's big appearance on TMZ and were impressed, so we're taking credit -- but only if it works. Watch and vote.

John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston reunited at Sunset Tower Hotel Tuesday night. The pair left separately, but we're told the two were very close inside.
If John was able to salvage things after dropping that whole "It's not you, it's me" speech to the pappers, he must have more game than Michael Jackson's playroom.

We've been bummed since John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston called it quits. But there's renewed hope.
We've confirmed they did indeed hang out this weekend in NYC. They chowed down at Il Mulino -- best Italian restaurant in the Big Apple. And that's not their only contact over the last few days.
Turns out their breakup was not a clean break after all. We now know they stayed in touch after they split. As for the National Enquirer report they were kissing at LAX after a flight from NYC... we can't confirm it.
One thing we did get. We're told it's not necessarily black and white -- that they may be more than not involved but less than involved. The middle ground is more fun anyway.

John Mayer almost broke someone's heart last night, and no it wasn't her.
Mayer and Chris Botti were doing a concert at the Boston Symphony Hall when the two performed the song "Glad to be Unhappy" by Frank Sinatra. A prescient Botti noted it's a song that truly breaks your heart.
Suddenly an elderly gentlemen in the front row dropped to the floor and appeared to be having a heart attack.
Now we're told the older dude had a cardiac disorder and fainted, but it wasn't a heart attack. He was taken to the hospital.
BTW, the concert continued, Mayer and Botti did the same song later in the night without incident!
